Well since I got back from Italy [ Trentino/Giro 2003 ] it's been a pretty dismal summer for me on the bike. I returned from the Giro with renewed motivation and improved fitness and managed to hold a fairly regular riding schedule for a few weeks after I got back. But with work and other distractions I was soon down to weekend rides only and as we said goodbye to summer sun and long evening rides I was saying goodbye to any decent base fitness I had earlier in the spring [ can you hear the violins? ;-) ]
Anyway that's past now and there's nothing I can do about it. However, things have got to change. I need something to aim at and motivate me to get back out and put the miles in. I have recently been asked to go out and do the Grandfondo Campagnolo 2004 [ see featured article ] and this looks like a great opportunity and the perfect motivation. I know its seems a way off, but if I'm going to put in respectable ride and complete the full Granfondo I'm going to have to start ASAP.
I've got some time off work at the moment so over the next three weeks I'm going to be putting in lots of slow long rides and trying to find things to do over the winter to maintain a decent level of fitness.
Great stuff from Roberto Heras, it will be really good to see him win the Vuelta today. After all the near misses and his work for Armstrong he deserves it.
