Top five

[ posted by iain Wednesday, December 31, 2003 ] Thanks to John B for this link on Tyler Hamilton's tour ride [ Hamilton the true hero after Tour of pain - FT.com ]. I cant wait to see what a fully fit Hamilton can do next year. It was great to see Bradley Wiggins [ Best male track rider ] and Nicole Cooke [ Best female road rider ] getting their due recognition in the cyclingnews readers polls. So just to keep with the trend of end of year statistics and polls here's the herneweb Top Five riders of 2003.

1. Jan Ullrich - Well I couldn't put him at number two again!! Hopefully he can go one better in the Tour next year.
2. Tyler Hamilton - not just for his Tour but also his Classics performance.
3. Yaroslav Popovyc - great in the Giro and should be one to watch again next year
4. Lance Armstrong - I know its a predictable choice but the way he pulled himself back in the Tour made for some edge-of-seat viewing over the summer and the best tour in years
5. Roberto Heras - good on him for leaving US Postal, I hope he goes on to make Armstrong work for his sixth Tour.

I really enjoyed Belleville Rendez-vous on Christmas day, but I think I need to watch it a couple of times to see all the little background details. I noticed Champion has a poster on his wall advertising le Circuit de France in 1942, a limited race run during the war in the Tour's absence. I'm going to try and find out a bit more about this and will post it on the site.
