Cycling Personality of the Year

In shameless homage to the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards last night, here's my choices for cycling personality of the year.

Overall
  1. Danilo Di Luca - what a season and his Giro placing was the result of some seriously hard riding.
  2. Ivan Basso - another great season and some really bad luck in the Giro. He has shown he has got what it takes to win the Grand Tours, I just hope he doesn't screw up by trying for two next year.
  3. Paolo Bettini - all round great racer with real class.
  4. Tom Boonen - had to be a contender, but for me his style doesn't have the excitement of some of the others in the list.
  5. Alejandro Valverde - really stirred up the Tour de France before tendonitis ruined his season, I can't wait to see him racing next year.
Young rider
  • Jose' Rujano Guillen - awesome in the Giro.
Team of the year
  • Discovery - no question.
I would have loved to put Ullrich on these lists but he just didn't cut it this year, hopefully next year.

Basso, yes - for sure. And I'm sure he'll make your list next season as well. Can Mr. Boonen follow up next year? I think at his very young age, his performance will swing a bit up and down still. I don't think he has the "staying power" to follow up next season. But, in 3-4 years he will have what it takes to become a legend. Of course, I would have to include Thor Hushovd on my list... :)
