Cycling Personality of the Year
In shameless homage to the BBC Sports Personality of the Year awards last night, here's my choices for cycling personality of the year.
Overall- Danilo Di Luca - what a season and his Giro placing was the result of some seriously hard riding.
- Ivan Basso - another great season and some really bad luck in the Giro. He has shown he has got what it takes to win the Grand Tours, I just hope he doesn't screw up by trying for two next year.
- Paolo Bettini - all round great racer with real class.
- Tom Boonen - had to be a contender, but for me his style doesn't have the excitement of some of the others in the list.
- Alejandro Valverde - really stirred up the Tour de France before tendonitis ruined his season, I can't wait to see him racing next year.
- Jose' Rujano Guillen - awesome in the Giro.
- Discovery - no question.
Comments:
Iain,
Basso, yes - for sure. And I'm sure he'll make your list next season as well. Can Mr. Boonen follow up next year? I think at his very young age, his performance will swing a bit up and down still. I don't think he has the "staying power" to follow up next season. But, in 3-4 years he will have what it takes to become a legend. Of course, I would have to include Thor Hushovd on my list... :)
