Into thin air
Not cycling literature but on Mags's recommendation and intrigued by the subsequent exchange of views I got hold of a copy of Jon Krakauer's 'Into thin air' this week.
I found it very difficult to put down and finished it late last night. For me Krakauer's writing style was a bit awkward but it didn't dull the feeling of how horrific it must have been for the climbers involved. He seems to do a good job of conveying the difficulties of climbing at high altitude. I will definitely be getting a copy of The Climb by Anatoli Boukreev and Dewalt to get the alternate description/interpretation of the tragedy.
Comments:
I'm glad you liked the book. "The climb" is interesting as well.
High altitude climbing is very facinating.

Beck Weathers wrote a book too. I believe the title is "Left for Dead" go figure.
I enjoyed Jon Krakauer's writing style as well. It's a lot like Daniel Coyle's--which isn't much of a surprise when you realize they're colleagues both at Outside Magazine and in book publishing. But yeah, I have no aspirations to climb Everest after reading his book.

Will try and climb the Denali within the next 5 years... If we can work it into the schedule.

No kidding? That's in my home neighborhood ... kinda. You can see Denali from my parents' community in AK. Beautiful. I have a friend who's done it, and he said it wasn't too bad. I know someone else who has climbed to the top and skied down. Perhaps that would be good olympic training, eh?
