Story behind the photo

The galleries on herneweb are the predictably the most visited areas of the site. Regulars will know these are thankfully not just the product of just my happy snapping and for that the credit must go to Phill and John Bryan. Although all the images are accompanied by a caption they don't all do them justice. I have a few blog posts saved up in blogger about my favourite photos but never thought to publish them. However, following some kind words from you out there I thought someone might find them interesting.

In no particular order, this first picture was taken in Arco, on the shores of Lake Garda during a stage start in the 2003 Giro. There had been a lot of waiting around at the start in Arco as the teams were presented and riders did their publicity duties. Once the police escort had left the start area the riders started to slowly pedal out in small groups. For me this photo really caught the casual attitude of the riders as they were setting out on another days ride. Some riders were still riding no handed, fitting their helmets and race radios, others were chatting to each other like a group of office workers on their daily commute. I used the rather flippant caption of "Discussing tactics or podium girls", but it really did seem that relaxed, almost mundane, for the riders in comparison to the excitement for the fans like me.

You can see the current maglia rosa Simoni grinning in the background.

207km later and Petacchi took his fifth of six stage wins for that year's race.

I agree, the photography is unbelievable. It makes me want to plan a vacation in Italy.
