Ullrich setback
Very disappointed to read the news that Ullrich pulls out of Sarthe with knee injury. I hope he has a speedy recovery and gets back into the races soon. Basso was looking ominously good at the weekend.Comments:
True. I might have to eat my words about Basso not having the 'killer instinct' necessary to win the Tour ...

I'm afraid I don't buy the knee injury story, according to the Italian Cycling Pro magazine who caught up with him 'training' in Tuscany he is probably in the worst shape he's ever been in for this time of year. He certainly looks quite porky (>90kg) and his training apparently consists of gentle riding with Rudy Pevenage and evenings in the local restaurants with his girlfriend.
Let's hope he sorts himself out but I've got that sinking feeling again..

One the of the writers on our blog, Scott, pointed out that after the knee injury Jan says he'll return to his "usual discipline" of training. Well, with all due respect, that probably won't cut it. Note that your usual discipline has been just short of the mark for a few years.
We ran a little poll to see what races a rider would have to race pre-Tour to still claim honor in winning the Tour. In other words, is it honorable to win the Tour if you soft-pedaled the whole season leading up to it. So far Basso is getting high marks for racing aggressively so far this year, and vowing to vie for the GC in the Giro.
He seems to be going after old-school style. Just race every race with passion and fun. It's good to see. As an American, and Texan, I'm a big Armstrong fan. But I never quite settled with the fact that he really only raced the Tour.
I'm becoming a bigger Basso fan every day. Maybe another Indurain? Well... probably too early to start crazy talk like that.
Hope you'll check out our blog sometimes. It's new, and traffic is REALLY low.
See ya.

I like the blog Jim, keep writing and I'm sure the traffic will go up. I tried to vote but there was a problem with the poll.
Lance wasn't the first to dedicate his season to the Tour but he did seem to make it an all or nothing event. Although, come to think of it, he never had to worry about it being a nothing event. Jan seems to have had the opposite.
With the Tour being the only really International high profile race it's understandle that riders/teams dedicate so much to it.
It's always good to see a rider putting in apperances thoughout the season and winning races. I like Basso, I'm not a Basso fan, but I agree he is looking very good.
