Beginning of year riding has been interrupted by my first cold in years, so it's bike-washing this weekend. I finished "Flying Scotsman" this week. When your reading the book, you're in no doubt why Graeme Obree wrote his biography. This is therapy in is most public form and would usually make for very uncomfortable reading, perhaps if he was more famous he would be doing this sort of confession on 'Parkinson'. But its not that awkward and is good reading for any cyclists.

Obree on a broomstick

I should just explain that I commute to my job on South West Trains. It was post-Christmas commuter hell this morning. Having just got over the shock of the recent ticket price rises I learnt that my train would take four time its usual journey time; so I squeezed onto the too small seat next to the too big gentleman next to me and started Graeme Obree's autobiography [ The Flying Scotsman ]. Needless to say I made much better progress through the book than my train was making towards its destination. It's a very interesting book and far more personal than anything Lance Armstrong has written. Obree has had a very rough time of it in very different ways to someone like Armstrong and writes very openly about some really difficult and personal issues. The last I heard of the planned movie of "The Flying Scotsman" was back in early 2003. According to his web site though, it seems they had one of the Harry Potter cast [ Sean Biggerstaff ] lined up to play Obree in the film!

I was looking round the web for some more information on the Ghent Six and found Fat Nick's [ European track cycling and six-day racing ]. Loads of stuff on Six day racing past and present. There's some interesting sites in the links section too. I have just been reading about the Herne Hill velodrome developments. By the looks of the planning proposal [ Herne Hill Velodrome ] the facilities should be excellent.
