During my investigations into riders with animal nick names I stumbled across Tom James' VeloArchive [ great site with loads of info on professional road riders and races, past and present ]. Of particular interest at the moment for obvious reasons is the Nicknames page.
Oh, and
- Johan Museeuw - the 'Lion of Flanders'
- Fausto Coppi - 'The Heron'
- Federico Bahamontès - 'The Eagle of Toledo'
I just found out who did the great paint jobs on Simoni's and Sacchi's bikes that we saw at this year's Giro d'Italia [ Simoni's "Spider bike" - Detail of spider bike head tube ].
Her name is Lara Cassanelli and the company is called Artech Design, check out the web site for more pics of her work [ Artech Design ].
So if Simoni's got a spider and Sacchi a leopard, what animals would the other members of the peloton past and present have if they could indulge themselves with these kind of paintjobs? Some names already taken include:
- Mario Cipollini - 'The Lion King'
- Paulo Bettini - 'The Cricket' (now there's a name to strike fear into the hearts of your opponents!)
- Laurent Jalabert - 'The Panda'
- and not forgetting the great Bernard Hinault - 'The Badger'
Guilty by association?
Just a few weeks after Charlie Wegelius was cleared of any doping charges [ BBC Sports News - 2 December 2003 ] one of Britain's higher profile riders has been seemingly unfairly associated with another drugs scandal. The Cofidis team headquarters were raided today after it was announced that the team physio Bogdan Madejak and former Cofidis rider Marek Rutkiewicz are suspected of supplying drugs to riders. However, although many of the press reports were keen to point out that the team has two cycling World Champions in Astarloa and Millar (in fact they have a track world champion also, Laurent Gane) there is nothing yet to associate any of them with the current issues. It's unfortunate that it takes something like this to get Millar's name in the British press. British press coverage is something David Millar talks about in procycling February 2004, not just for his own achievements but also for the sport as a whole. Maybe he could take his place on the start line for the planned "Tour of Britain"; as a world champion, I reckon his parcipation in events in Britain would do a lot to raise the profile of the sport.Archives
