For once the flatter stages of the Tour provided more interest than the mountains. What promised to be the most competitive Tour in years ended up as not much more than an extended victory procession for Armstrong's sixth. All his rivals had been written off or eliminated before the real tests had even started. Thank God Petacchi didn't show the same form as he did in the Giro or the Tour would have been reduced to an overblown promotional criterium. Voeckler was excellent and provided the most interest in the early mountain stages and towards the end even Simeoni did his bit to liven things up. It was pretty sad to see Armstrong chasing him down and forcing him back to the peloton. Regardless of what you think of Simeoni I reckon Armstrong should have left him to it. What was worse was to have heard that, despite his complaints about the fans spitting on Alpe d'Huez, members of his own team spat at Simeoni when he returned to the group [ daily peloton ]Archives
