Wake up calls
This blog is supposed to be about cycling so I'll refrain from lengthy explanations of absence. Let's just say I have let the more mundane aspects of life take precedence over the more interesting recently and it's about time I get things back to a healthier balance.
The Tour de France is well under way and the peloton has been almost decimated by the recent round of doping scandals, pro-cycling's reputation is at it's most sullied.
Basso and Ullrich's suspension was the culmintation of weeks of news stories and rumours about who was on 'the list'. To be honest I thought the big names would just ride out the storm like others have done in the past, but to see the top two contenders leave the day before the prologue was a huge surprise, sadly not because of the doping, but more because someone had taken some pre-emptive action.
On the presumption of innocence you've got to feel some sympathy for the riders. To arrive in your top form in the only race that matters to you and then to be suspended by your team must be devastating. I really cannot see how Ullrich will ever return to racing if things continue to progress as they have.
I'll write more soon, but in the meantime you can let your feelings be known on the vote "Is it right to exclude riders from races if they are under investigation for doping offences?"
