Hamilton
Having read the news about Hamilton's signing to Tinkoff I was a bit baffled by his statement saying he had made mistakes and paid the price. Was this Hamilton admitting guilt?
Well apparently not. It turns out the statement was mistranslated and has subsequently been corrected [ full story here ]. The Hamilton saga has more twists and turns than Alpe d'Huez!
Hard Rain
Well, four fine Saturdays in November was asking a little too much. I was faithful to Mark W's weather rule today. If it's not raining as you leave the house you are obliged to head out on the ride. If it is raining you can decline without being accused of being a wuss. What a mistake!
Today had some of the worst weather I have ridden in for a long time. It started with a gusty wind and at about half-way the heavens opened up. This wasn't a light drizzle, it was a monsoon-like downpour. Every climb was immediately converted into a stream of grit and rocks. I was praying I wasn't going to get a puncture. Then came the lightning, then the thunder, then the hail! By now my kit was soaked through, my shoes were three times the weight they were when I left the house and I was having real problems seeing anything beyond my front wheel.
Then I made a really bad decision, I took shelter for ten minutes while I waited for the worst to pass. From that point on I never warmed up. I really should have kept going, I wasn't going to get any wetter, but the thing that persuaded me to shelter was the lightning, I wasn't about to advertise myself as the nearest conduit to the earth. I tried to push it on every hill on the way home to get some heat back into my hands and feet but to no avail. Despite the fairer weather later on, it finished as an uncomfortable 50 miler.
Has anyone ever heard of a cyclist being struck by lightning?
