Tempting fate

Rainy

Yesterday afternoon in the office we were planning Sunday's ride. The weather forecast is for damp and breezy conditions. According to the designated route planner the likelihood of punctures is quite high, something he learnt from experience riding a triathlon in the same area in similar weather last year. Before my brain engaged the correct gear I blurted out that I was really happy with the punctureless off-season I was having with the Continentals I am using at the moment. Will I never learn?!

So the inevitable happened today during a wet, hilly ride over Coombe Bottom then up and around Ranmoor via Denbies Farm to Box Hill. I got one puncture at the top of Box Hill and another at the bottom on the return leg. Thankfully I had enough spares to prevent me from having to mess about with glue and patches in the rain. Sitting on a damp rock, surrounded by inner tubes and broken tyre levers, it is always nice to get offers of help from other cyclists that pass, even if they are refused with a "thumbs up" and thanks. I managed to return the good will by lending my pump to another unlucky rider on the way home.

A quick visit to bike shop this evening has me stocked up with enough tubes to hopefully get me round tomorrow's ride... I shouldn't have said that should I?

Not quite white Christmas.

Cloudy

Two of us out for 50 miles in the Surrey/Hampshire hills today, which was enough to allow a guilt free day of indulgence tomorrow. The weather wasn't great but nothing like as bad as the storm that I got caught in last time I rode this route. It was so bad last time my bike computer never recovered and has been telling me it's -120°C and that I'm living at 1300M ever since. I used Christmas to justify spending money on the replacement. Back to the weather though; we rode through settled snow today!! It was a just a few km of road but there was snow on the ground, not sure it qualifies as a "White Christmas" unfortunately.

Anyway, have a Happy Christmas and good luck with your cycling in the New Year.
