Bradley Wiggins: 54% David Millar: 46%

Great to see Bradley Wiggins take a track gold at the Worlds, he gave Bartko a bit of a pasting. He also beat David Millar in the latest vote, by a smaller margin though. 54% of you wanted Wiggins to win the Tour prologue over Millar. Prompted by a recent comment on a post about Phil Liggett I'm putting Duffers and Liggett in a head-to-head for your favourite non-pro commentator in the new vote.

I like Liggett's commentary on the highlights but I'm not sure he can compete with Duffers' cyclo-gastronomic ramblings on the all afternoon coverage.

Ultra marathon madness

Herneweb has just returned from a prolonged period of outage. A bit frustrating but I didn't have a huge amount to write about during the down-time.

In fact during the outage I started and finished reading Dean Karnazes' Ultra Marathon Man - Confessions of an all-night runner. The review by the Boston Globe on the back of the book said "...for anyone who likes to read about ordinary people doing extraordinary things". Let me tell you, Dean Karnazes is not an ordinary person, not by a long shot.

A good runner in his high school years, Karnazes was a successful businessman who, on his thirtieth birthday decided to start running again, in his boxers shorts, after a drunken night of celebration. He ran 30 miles that night and has gone on to perform some outrageous running feats including running 50 marathons, in 50 states, in 50 consecutive days and taking part in a 200 mile relay race as a one man team. I thoroughly recommended reading the book, it is a fascinating story of how he has turned himself from being a average athlete into someone who has pushed his body way way beyond the boundaries that most average people and probably most doctors would think possible. You can find out more about Karnazes on his website, ultramarathonman.com, which has lots of multimedia content to browse around, even if the design is a little frustrating.

One of the most fascinating aspects of his talent is the ability for him to survive on minimal amounts of sleep while still training, holding down a successful job and being a family man. As an amateur who often finds it difficult to find the time to ride, work, play and get enough rest I am amazed and a little envious at his ability to do this.
